Bishop's Award for Outstanding Congregation
St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Eastport (Annapolis) Maryland received the highest honors from the Maryland Diocese at the 2006 Diocesan Convention. See the accompanying letter text below for award details:
Jesus said, "In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in Heaven." (Matthew 5:16) The light that shines reveals warm hospitality, where Sunday greeters do not merely give out a bulletin, but see that each has a seat and that visitors are fully welcome. The light that shines is a wonderful diversity of God's people of all ages, gender, races and cultures, and where the seeker can seek and those firm in the faith know the ground is solid. The light that shines is a creative use of limited space so the learning that can happen for all. The light that shines is where good stewardship is not just the raising of funds, but the generous commitment of all resources to God's glory. When the light shines bright enough, people notice and so space becomes an issue. When the light shines bright enough, people come to worship and they stay. When the light shines bright enough, a small congregation has to ask about building and growing without losing the joy of the light. When the light is shining people are fed with enriching worship, pastoral preaching and a caring people. When the light shines, the people of the community notice all kinds of things. They see that there are people in need, without all of the opportunities for housing, education and health care. They see that just as close by there is affluence and opportunity such as we do not find in many places. When the light shines, challenges become not only opportunities but a serious and compelling call to the discipleship demanded by Christ, So the light shines in creative worship and music, loving community, Godly Plan in an unlikely, but effect, space, true hospitality, wonderful diversity and a rector who can reflect the greatest calm. The light shines as a church with joy, and some anxiety, anticipating a future that just maybe seems surprising. Yet grace is always surprising.
