St. Luke’s becomes a Welcoming and Affirming Parish
In 1976, the General Convention of the Episcopal Church said, “homosexual persons are entitled to equal protection of the laws with all other citizens,” and “homosexual persons are children of God who have a full and equal claim with all other persons upon the love, acceptance, and pastoral concern and care of the Church.”
At its January 16, 2007 meeting, the Vestry passed a resolution joining with other Episcopal Churches in Annapolis by making St. Luke’s a welcoming and affirming parish to all Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered persons. “The Welcoming and Affirming Parishes Program of the Diocese of Maryland is an affirmation of the inclusive nature of the Gospel combined with the traditions as embodied in the baptismal covenants. In an effort ‘to strive for justice and peace’ and ‘to love our neighbors as ourselves,” the parishes listed [in the diocesan brochure] reach out to, and affirm, those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgendered” (The Welcoming and Affirming Parishes Program, Diocese of Maryland).
This resolution will be posted on the diocesan and St. Luke’s web-sites. As soon as we receive the diocesan brochures on the Welcoming and Affirming Parishes, we will make them available to all parishioners and visitors at St. Luke’s.
